You will be allowed to use a calculator and have a blank sheet of paper to calculate on. You must memorize the required conversion formulas, IV formulas, and dosage calculation formulas. You will have one hour to complete the test. All students will be required to complete the test in that time frame. If you do not pass the first math test, you will be allowed to take a second math test. Students who do not pass the second math test will be required to drop N205.

Practice Math Problems

1. Use of Basic Math:

Ordered 500 cc D5W with .45%N/S in 6 hours. How many cc/hr should you set the IV pump for?

ANSWER

SHOW ME HOW

2. Use of IV gtt factor formula:

Union Hospital uses IV tubing which has a drop factor of 15 gtt/ml. If an IV is supposed to be running at 83 cc/hr, how many drops/minute should it be running at?

ANSWER

SHOW ME HOW

3. Use of basic algebra:

At 1600 hours you started an IV with 500cc of D5W running at 50 ggt/min using microdrip (60 gtt/cc) tubing. You now receive an Abbott IV pump, which must be set in cc/hr. How many cc/hr should you set the pump for to keep the IV going at the same rate?

ANSWER

SHOW ME HOW

4. Use of basic algebra and military time

At 1600 hours you started an IV with 1000cc of D5W running at 75 cc/hr. What time will the infusion be complete?

ANSWER

SHOW ME HOW

5. Use of basic algebra to calculate IVPB rate.

You are ready to hang a 0900 IVPB of Mandol 1 Gm in 50 cc N/S. The instructions say to run the medication in over 45 minutes. The IV pump must be set in cc/hr. How many cc/hr must you set the pump for in order to run 50cc IVPB in 45 min?

ANSWER
SHOW ME HOW
