Statement
Our internationally known Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredited program in athletic training is designed to educate future professionals to become National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATA-BOC) certified athletic trainers and to serve in the rapidly expanding sports medicine profession.
Pre-Professional Component
This component of the curriculum is designed to provide the student with basic study in ISU's General Education Program, introductory course work in athletic training, and job shadowing experiences.
Professional Component
In the professional component, students complete clinical education experiences. Classroom work meets the Athletic Training Education Competencies requirements and includes study in the following subjects: orthopedic evaluation and diagnosis, organization and administration of health care delivery systems, pharmacology, therapeutic modalities, pathophysiology, therapeutic exercise, techniques of counseling, technical writing, emergency medical care and first aid, health biostatistics, and exercise physiology.
Professional Component AdmissionsThe number of students accepted into the professional component is limited. Matriculating students typically apply during the Spring semester of their freshmen year. Transfer students are encouraged to apply when they have completed or are enrolled in prerequisite course equivalents. Prerequisite courses include Athletic Training 110, 210, 210L, 212, 212L, 225 , and 280. At the time of application students must submit, along with the application, evidence of job shadowing hours, current emergency cardiac care certification, physical, proof of hepatitis B vaccination or waiver, technical standards, and a copy of official transcripts. The following selection criteria and weighting will be used to rate and rank applicants: grade point average for all college or university course work (35%), reference evaluations (35%), responses to application questions (20%), and high school grade point average (10%). Formal acceptance into the professional component of the program requires a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and successful completion in pre-requisite courses. Eligibility to apply for admission does not guarantee selection into the professional component. Successful completion of a course requires a grade of C or better. Retention in the professional component is contingent on meeting academic standards. If a student fails to meet these academic standards probation and dismissal can result.
