About Us

Objectives

To provide the opportunities for the development of decision-making ability and potential talents of students who have been neglected. To provide an atmosphere conducive for relevant psychological and social needs of African-students. To provide educational experience in areas of African-American history and culture, problems of African-American development, and race relations issues. To coordinate efforts with existing programs and departments To provide direct services to persons & groups who can affect changes needed to make our society a radically just.


Description of Service in Program Terms

The twelve major areas of the African-American Cultural Center are:

African-American History Month

This is a program established during February which includes a variety of African-American Cultural events. It consists of a combination of the following activities: Speaker (historian) Theater Group Dinner Film Artist Poet

African-American Fine Arts Festival

This is a program that has been established to compliment other areas and events that will be in  process.  Some of the activities include: Poet, Dance Group, Artist, Film, Theater Group, Musical Group.

Free admission due to the nature of culture programs.

African-American Choir

This is a program to serve the purpose of giving students an opportunity to express what is being done physically, that is collectively expressing pride in their inheritance. This will eventually become a self-supporting program because this group will travel and accept fees for performing. The monies above will be used to purchase some uniform dress and musical instruments.

African-American Awareness Week

This is a program that initiated the first month of the Fall Semester which includes a variety of African-American cultural events. Some of the following activities in prior years include: Art Exhibit, Poet, Musical Group, Dance, etc. African-American Identity Series
This is a program that provides for several national or outstanding cultural events to take place sometimes during the school year. It could possibly include any of these activities: Theater Group, Musical Group, Dance Group, etc. These events will more than pay for themselves.

Cultural Rental Program

This allocation is used to rent cultural exhibits of outstanding works in arts, history, literature, etc. from other institutions. Major cost is transportation and insurance.

2. Groups to which Program Directed.
The services of the African-American Cultural Center are available to all students, however, the primary emphasis of the Cultural Center is to attempt to correct the conditions of neglect and distortion of African-American history and culture. The African-American Cultural Center will focus its energy on the corrective measures first at the University itself, and second at the general community. The vehicle through which student input and participation for programming is in the form of an advisory board. 3. Objectives of Programs
African-American Awareness Month To create an atmosphere to stimulate a general awareness to the various aspects of African American Cultural contributions.
To expose students to formative persons and/or groups thereby providing practical applications to theory obtained in classes relating to the African-American experience.
To motivate students to become more actively involved in the pursuit of their educational goals and its related significance to the African-American heritage.
To foster cooperation and coordination among individuals and student groups thereby removing communication and social barriers affecting social educational progress. African-American Political Workshop To expose students to a set of criteria for selection of political candidates.
To provide a frame of reference for evaluation of various political positions.
To motivate students to become active in the political process.
To facilitate an atmosphere to foster interaction for political awareness.
To provide a vehicle for communication between students and political figures.
To clear up and inform students about any misunderstandings/misconceptions about the political process. African-American Professional Workshop To expose students to new insights within professional fields.
To inform students of (educational and/or training) pitfalls in professional fields.
To provide initial exposure to African-American people in professional fields.
To develop sound criteria in choosing a professional career. Art Purchase and Reproductions*
This program is intended to enhance the many contributions that African-Americans have made in the form of art work and artifacts. It represents the trials and tribulations that have long been representative of our struggle. The Art Department Chairman informed me that this type of program can be self-supporting. This can be accomplished by having the artist sign reproductions of his work and selling these prints to other institutions, public schools, private industries, etc.

Arts Banquet

This is a program that is held toward the end of the academic school year. It has been created to give recognition to those African-American students who have served in a variety of capacities at the Center during the year.

Field Trip Program

This program is intended to help students increase their awareness and understanding of African-American contributions in all phases of life by traveling to other institutions and visiting other organizations.

Workshop Series

This is a program designed to assist students in becoming aware of historical and contemporary contributions made by African-Americans in this country. It is designed to encourage students to participate in activities of educationally relevant activities. Some of the workshops that have been instituted in prior years included: Religion, National Building, Education, University-Community Relations and Unity.

African-American Student Orientation

This is a program initiated to improve the orientation of new African-American students to this campus. It includes: Orientation Handbook, Student Advisors, and Refreshments. *Summer Programs This is a program designed to involve those students who attend the first summer session of the University and will include: An African Feast and Movie Series.
African-American History Month To expose students to African-American heritage.
To give the true significance of African-American heritage as it related to the African-American movements.
To give its significance to advancement of the African-American nation.
To provide a criteria for evaluating historical contributions made by African-Americans.
To provide students with models to motivate them to higher degrees of excellence. Religious Workshops To expose students to various kinds of religious ideologies.
To show significance of religious influence on African-American living.
To provide a vehicle for interaction between students and African-American religious leaders.
To provide an educational climate whereby an open exchange of theological information can be fostered and evaluated empirically.

African-American Arts Festival

To display outstanding skills of African-American students.
To develop a positive vehicle for student appreciation of African American Cultural models.
To provide the means necessary to stimulate the development of African-American talents and skills.
To compliment the other areas of African-American culture and thereby developing a kaleidoscopic view of their interrelated significance.
To develop to increase tendency to participate from University and Community populous due to the variety in the different phases of the African-American Arts Festival.
To provide the positive mental attitude needed to enhance the relevant African-Americans and significance others. African-American Student Awards Day To recognize individuals and groups of African-American students who have accomplished high levels of achievement during the past year.
To motivate underclassmen to higher levels of personal attainment.
To support interest given to African-American students by African-American faculty, staff, and community in the development of skills and talents beyond the scope of unusual circumstances.
To encourage more individuals and group participation in African-American Awareness by promoting active involvement in programs, activities, and organizations relevant to the African-American heritage. African-American Freshman Orientation To assist specifically in the orientation of African-American freshman students.
To present students with a booklet that will identify problems, offer solutions, and/or inform students where appropriate assistance can be gained.
To assist more African-American students in graduating from the University.
To serve as a supplementary phase of the regular orientation program.
4. Evaluation Procedures. The evaluation procedures for programs are based on a variety of techniques implemented by the African-American Cultural Center staff and Student Advisory Board. Some techniques as attitude scales, program survey forms, end of semester evaluation report, individual program evaluation forms, and audience head count are used in the process of ascertaining the decision areas of concern, selecting appropriate information, and collecting and analyzing information in order to report summary data useful to examine and judge concerning the worth, quality, significance, and/or condition of the existing programs. The above evaluation tools are used to help make decisions concerning the selection among alternative directions for either reorganizations and/or coordinating the presently funded programs. III. Separate Listing and Programs and Functions in Priority Order The priority ranking of programs of the African-American Cultural Center have been established with the assistance of students and staff members. The order by which they fall have been based on survey program ratings, observations, program attendance and need.
